Have you ever seen a Steeplechase race in the Olympics or any other athletics event? The steeplechase is an obstacle race in athletics, where athletes have to cross several barriers to complete the race & achieve their goals. A 3,000 meters’ steeplechase is defined in the rule book as having 28 barriers and seven water jumps.
If you observe carefully, like every other race there will be few athletes who enjoy completing this race while few of them get tired, feel fatigue, get several cramps & in the end fall down while jumping on any of the barriers. To complete such a race with so many barriers & obstacles, the athletes train themselves every single day in order to be fit, focused & most of all to improve their competency to overcome all those obstacles.
The key towards staying inspired for such a training is burning desire to win, awareness of the obstacles involved & will to improve their competencies to overcome these obstacles.
In our respective lives, in order to succeed, to achieve any life goal & to complete the race we also need to overcome certain barriers on a daily basis. As in steeplechase you can see the barriers clearly, whereas in our day to day life we chose to ignore them because we ourselves create those barriers & get distracted.
In my opinion below are the self-made barriers that causes distraction on daily basis in our race to achieve our life goals-
- Mobile phones
- Social Media Platforms
- Relationship issues
- Past failures
- Addictions – Alcohol, Smoking, Tea, Coffee
- Excessive partying
- Comfort zone mindset & Procrastination
Let us look at these barriers & distractions in some details–
1.Mobile Phones –
Believe me nothing has created more distraction than this small appliance called mobile phone in the last 10 years in our daily life. People of all ages like students, professionals, non-professionals & even retired personnel are equally addicted to mobiles now.
When I say addiction it means, keeping mobile near to you always, carrying it from one room to another even though it’s not required, watching complete season of a web series in one go, paying attention to its blank screen even though we are in a serious conversation with someone, taking photographs of the delicious food instead of enjoying it & most importantly feeling of urge to check the mobile when you hear a message tone.
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms that means you are completely addicted to your mobile phone.
Just by observing your own behavior closely you will realize, your mobile phone is actually creating a lot of distractions towards focusing on certain tasks & your distracted mind is struggling & taking too much time completing certain tasks. Such delays in task completion causes piles of unfinished work at the end of the day & results in a lot of stress.
Even though we are working real hard every day, such stress caused by unfinished work delays gratification & also creates future barriers in focusing & planning for long term goals.
Looking at all these symptoms, there are so many mobile DE addiction centres & therapies operational around the world. So, if you genuinely wish to take control of your day’s activities & regain the lost focus, start using your smart phone in a smarter way.
You can try below ideas-
- Decide specific timing in a day to watch your favorite shows.
- When spending time with your partner & kids try to keep mobile in a different room.
- Keep mobile away while eating, watching TV or while doing any activity where mobile is not a necessity. Enjoy that particular moment completely without distractions.
This is one tool if used properly can create miracles for you or else you will never get any idea how badly you have wasted your time in it.
I personally stopped using “Facebook” in 2012 & recently reactivated my profile. The reason to stop using Facebook was simple, I was spending hell lot of time on it during my working hours. It created enough distraction for me, my performance & behavior was badly affected in office & in personal space too.
There is a race on for everyone on such social media sites to prove how intelligent & knowledgeable they are. In India, other than sharing happy memories & cultural event photographs on social media, the favorite pastime of people is posting on social media sites about their views on politics, religion & national security affairs.
I really wonder, how come anyone becomes so desperate & intelligent to talk on politics, religion & national security matters on social media sites. Also, people who invest their maximum time in posting such matters go to an extent that they start fighting with their own friends if they have different opinions about the matter.
The problem with such social media platforms is, they are simply addictive. Youngsters keep posting on such platforms in anticipation of appreciation & likes for their posts. If they get less likes & comments, it’s very easy for them to get demotivated. At times, so many of them feel inferior only because their friends seem far happier & fulfilled in the photographs that they post on their profiles.
In critical times like what we are facing due to Covid -19, we need to focus on improving our competencies to stay on track to our goals.
So one needs to understand, is it really worth to spend this much of their time & energy on social media platforms which compromises on their daily tasks & in the long run on their life goals.
Such social media platforms are good till we use them to connect with our friends & for sharing happy moments. Let us draw a boundary for their usage & get our focus back on our goals.
I still remember how I closely watched each & every match of the 2003 Cricket world cup even though it was colliding with my graduation final year exams. The reason I used to give to my parents for watching TV was, it relieves study stress & I feel fresh after that. It was a complete lie & the effect is visible in my above average final year grades.
There were so many of my friends who were glued to the TV & they became couch potatoes with this routine. All they were doing is keeping a study book in one hand & TV remote in another. We were giving exercise to our thumbs only by changing TV channels frequently from 1-100. It not only wasted our precious time but also hampered our ability to focus & concentrate on one single task.
Nowadays there is a decline in TV viewership, thanks to many entertainment applications available in mobile phones. But still there are viewers who continue to enjoy family drama serials, heated debates on news channels & few of the TV reality shows. Sometimes the craze goes up to the level that, family starts debating on political views after watching heated debates & sometimes the kids stay deprived of their food since the family has completely lost their mind in watching TV series.
Let us understand, watching TV with family should be a joyful time where the entire family sits together, laughs, shares their day and enjoys the time. This quality time spent with our loved ones should encourage us more for the next day’s hard work rather than spoiling it by debating on irrelevant political issues. If we can use this time properly watching television won’t be a distraction & it will definitely help us in a better way.
